A few simple tips to get you started in changing your Dog’s behaviour

Excessive Barking

There are many reasons for excessive barking….. boredom, attention seeking, protecting territory, Separation anxiety, just to name a few.  

  • Remove the dog from the environment that is causing him/her to bark and put in a comfortable area.
  • Provide bored dogs with toys, frozen bones, kongs, to keep them entertained whilst you are away.
  • Ignore the dog when trying to get your attention. Reward the dog when it is not barking.
  • Join obedience classes

 

Chewing

Again, there are many reasons this may be occurring, particularly with puppies.

  • Restrict play zones.
  • Supervise puppies and provide alternate items to chew on.
  •  Investigate your dog’s diet.
  • Join obedience classes

 

Jumping

This is mainly due to excitement, attention seeking and dominance.

  • Ignore the behaviour, fold your arms.                
  • Squirt with water
  • Only allow jumping on command.
  • Join obedience classes

Digging

Usually due to genetics, boredom, trying to escape, separation anxiety

  • Place the dog in a pen, restrict play zones
  • Punish only when caught in the act
  • Fill hole with water or faeces
